Name : Alex Mathew
Brief Bio : Born 1957 Trivandrum Kerala. Alex studied sculpture in the local fine arts college. Won national diploma in 1981. He followed up with two years spent in Baroda M.S. University. His work during this period comprised of wooden figures, most carved in a manner suggesting the indissoluble and integral links of humans with the earth-world they come from.
Mathew won a scholarship to Hoch Schule fur Bildene Kunset Germany, receiving exposure to European artistic trends of expressionism. This reflect in the harsher edges his figures during this time. On return to India, Mathew worked in several Indian cities before joining the Faculty of Sculpture at M.S.University in 1994.
Mathew has exhibited widely, in major galleries of India, as well as Geneva 1987. He has experimented with fibreglass, though prefering wood to other material.
