Dhawan does not set out to be an abstractionist. The works are impressionistic and hint at figuration. He leaves it to the viewer to derive images and meanings and does not title his works for this reason. His works are non-representational; to say they are abstract would confine them to a limit. Dhawan has a free-flowing, spontaneous style.
His minimal and judiciously used colours play an integral part in his work, engaging the viewer in a deep communion, far from retinal perception. Rajendra Dhawan’s works are visual experiences, his hazy palette hinting at landscapes suspended in time. He works with a limited palette, discarding the excess, just as in the process of life … There is no deliberation; it’s a spontaneous gesture. “I bring into painting my life experiences… My works have evolved as I have with time. I paint today as I did years ago, but when I sometimes look back I see that change. It’s a subtle change that happens as I grow; it’s as imperceptible as my personal growth trajectory.” It is with a sense of reverence that Threshold presents this suite of paintings by Rajendra Dhawan.
